Tips for first time user w/ IUD
Hi all! So I finally got my BlueCup late last week and my stubborn first post-IUD period seems to be starting, about a month over do. I've had spotting for the past 4 days which finally got heavy this afternoon, but once again tapering off to near nothing. Hmm...

Anyway, so because it seems as if I'm starting I would like to try using my menstrual cup. At the very least to catch the spotting fluids I've been having that has ruined several pairs of panties. I've been looking up videos on how to do folds and insert the cup properly. Are there any tips on inserting the cup with the IUD? What should I do with the strings? How should I insert it? What should I do upon removal?

I've already used a couple tampons with no problems so I'm hoping the cup goes the same way. Any IUD users out their with their input would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Looking for: a non-audition choir to join
So I'm looking for a non-audition choir to join in the fall.

I used to sing in various school choirs prior to attending university, but I haven't since then. I've missed choral singing though, so I want to be part of a choir again. My university has a non-audition choir that I was interested in joining, but unfortunately their rehearsal time doesn't work with my schedule.

I'm looking specifically for a non-audition choir, since I'm not a music student or someone with a technical background in music/singing. I've sung in choirs before so I do have some vocal experience, but it's been a couple of years since I last participated in anything. I'm particularly interested in joining something that targets young adults (I'm 20), but I'd be okay with choirs comprised of a wider range of ages. I have some interest in jazz since I used to sing in a jazz choir during high school, but I'm open to just about anything. I'd prefer joining a choir that isn't affiliated with any particular religion though.

I've never been in a choir that wasn't under a school, so I'm not really sure what's out there. Someone just passed me this link with a directory of GTA area choirs and I'll be looking through that, but I'd like to hear some personal recommendations from people who are in / have been in Toronto-based choirs themselves.

Need money + I just really need to get rid of clothes that no longer fit and therefore never wear and other stuff I don't need. Any sales are very appreciated!
Prices are negotiable (esp. if you buy multiple items). Best meeting place is the Eaton Centre area during the week and during office hours, but if that doesn't work, then I'm sure we can arrange something.

    Professional area rug cleaning
    Hello good people,

Does anybody have experience of professional area rug cleaning in Toronto? I did a search but only found posts about steam-cleaning carpet, nothing about area rugs.

A few months ago I had a 6 x 8 ft. oriental rug cleaned by a company that charged 120 dollars. It was a spur of the moment thing, I'd found the rug on the sidewalk, it was wet and disgusting and I just wanted it cleaned, phoned someone to come and take care of it. They did a nice job, but in my current situation 120 bucks is a lot more than it was a few months ago...

I'm aware that you can rent one of those cleaning apparatuses from Home Depot and probably elsewhere too, but I just don't know if that would work. I'm talking about a big wool rug that's seen many years of indoors smoking, so it's bound to be a tough job. The only reason why I suddenly care is that I'm now situated in the basement, no longer smoke indoors, and the humidity is making the rug stink. I can't stand sleeping next to it anymore, but I don't want to toss it either.

So any info and experiences on rug cleaners are welcome. Thank you!

Our city employs some pretty awesome, dedicated people
A look at the unsung civic heroes

Yvonne de Wit, the manager at Toronto Public Health who designed the city's A La Cart program for multi-ethnic street food, has been working nights at the Seaton House men's hostel, cleaning feces and breaking up fights.

Uli Watkiss, the city clerk, is working in the mail room in the basement of City Hall. "I'm fine," she said. "A lot better than some of the other people."

And at the city's water filtration plants, management staff have stayed in the locked facilities day and night since the strike began, with other staff bringing them in food.

These are the unsung heroes of the city workers' strike, now in its fourth week -- the 4,000 "non-union and management staff" trying to keep some of the city functioning. The city has forbidden them from talking to the media, so none spoke for the record for this article. Many said they are working seven days a week, 12 hours a day. They are earning barge-loads of overtime pay, but are not seeing their families, and many summer vacations are now up in the air.

The city knows these workers' value as it attempts to hold firm against asking the province to legislate the strikers back to work. Last week Mayor David Miller sent an email to all of them to thank them.

"I want you all to know that I appreciate your work and am very proud of how you have responded during this challenging time,'' Mr. Miller wrote.

The overtime must be great, but it's still definitely a sacrifice to be "redeployed" from your Old City Hall office to collecting bags of trash at a temporary dumpsite. Consider giving the workers at the dumpsites or at City Hall a thumbs up if you're headed in that direction.

    WTF:Cubible Walls.
Hello there awesome Toronto community. I am in need of some cubicle walls for my hubby's home office. We just moved into a one bedroom apartment and we need to create a childproof space so that we don't have to worry about our three year old pulling cords out while the hubby is programing. So if anyone knows of an office that is getting rid of old cubicle walls I would gladly take 3 or 4 off their hands.

    TIA!!!

    Hi all,

I'm working on completing a dual masters program in Social Work and Law and Social Policy. I just finished my first year, have two more to go! At this time, I'd really like to start Spanish classes and I was wondering what others have done or would suggest- online courses vs. courses in the local community college vs. a program like Rosetta Stone.

I'm under no time frame (unless of course I choose the community college route, in which case I need to register for a fall course), so I'm looking for the most comprehensive means of doing so. I took a look at the community memories, but there were only a few related topics. I did note some really good suggestions though, such as reading newspapers/other forms of print/online media, radio, tv, etc.

I've noticed that between the two community colleges that I'm looking at, one college offers conversational Spanish courses, while the other college offers classes such as Spanish for Medical Personnel.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance!

    Black to blonde
I dyed my naturally red hair black about two years ago. For the past year (up until about a month ago) I've also had part of it some fun color like purple, green, or blue, although I recently dyed all of it black because I'm job hunting.
And then I decided to go blonde.
The Process and Pics Behind the Cut )
Obviously I've still go a way to go. Hopefully 3 or 4 more applications of bleach will get me to light enough hue that I can tone it and get some shade of blonde, although I kind of like the light red I ended up with.
Does anyone who's done this before have advice for me? I'm trying to get to a very, very light shade of blonde, and it's a little depressing that after 4 applications of bleach, the best I could do was light orange. Am I doing something incorrectly?

    Hi Toronto,

Once again, Boogie Time United is looking for more players for our soccer team!

Copying and pasting 'cause I'm lazy.

"This SUNDAY league will be played at Central Tech. Your season begins this Sunday July 19. A google map has been attached below with the location of the field.
Central Tech: 725 Bathurst (Bathurst and Bloor)
Here is a link to a map to Central Tech:
    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=725+Bathurst+,+Toronto+,+Ontario,+Canada&sll=43.637442,-79.420595&sspn=0.026027,0.074844&ie=UTF8&ll=43.664519,-79.410446&spn=0.006504,0.018711&z=16&iwloc=addr

All games will be refereed by an XTSC Official, starting at 5:15 or
    6:30."

    It's rec/competitive, six on six.
We're terrible, but really do try and definitely got so much better this season. Last season we won one game, tied another, and lost 5. But we tried! And are super enthusiastic. Lots of Boogie-ing and cheering. And we go out for foood and beer afterwards.

You can wear cleats (plastic), but the field is kinda just dirt. I recommend shin pads, but you don't have to wear them (i just wore thick socks).
I think our colour is light blue, but that might change.

    The season runs from:
    Sunday, July 19th (6:30pm game)
    until
    Sunday, August 30th

(With a tournament on the weekend of Sept 12/13 or something, who knows).

Cost right now is 50 bucks for the season, but if more people join, it decreases.

    Affordable vets in Toronto
    hey y'all,

my Dad is in the hospital and he left behind two cats that no one in my family can take care of due to allergies/apathy. Believe me, neither he nor I are happy about this.

My friend is going to adopt one, but the trouble is the cat isn't spayed. Can anyone recommend a vet who might be willing to let us pay in installments to have her shots/spaying done? Or if not in installments, at least a cheap place we could visit? This is an unexpected expense for her and my own funds are kind of tapped because of some things to do with my Dad's hopsital visit. We can probably travel anywhere, but she lives on Victoria Park so east would be better.

    1. We'd like somewhere where we could take Pixie and get her shots and spayed.
    2. We'd like somewhere where we could have both cats checked out to see if they are pregnant? If not pregnant (we think there might be a chance with Tigger) she might like to take both.. but if the cat is pregnant she can't take her and we don't want to incur more expenses. Does that make any sense? My grandma wants to take her straight to the humane society but I figured if there's a sympathetic vet who can confirm she's not pregnant, we can keep both kitties from the pound..

My Dad used to volunteer at some sort of cat rescue place run by a woman in her late 70s named FERN. It was in the Queen/Dovercourt area IIRC. Is anyone familiar with this place? I am not sure if she actually can do neutering or is willing to do it for animals not in her care but I thought I'd see if anyone was familiar with the place/Fern.

Any leads welcome! Pixie thanks you. She's not a "MomCat" type.

Everyone loves pictures of kitties! )

    City Hall

Does anyone know what's up with the CUPE 79 dinks members blocking City Hall and not letting anyone in for five minutes?

I was curious and didn't really need to go in, but the strikers wouldn't tell me anything - they just repeated it was "a five minute wait to get in".  I witnessed some pissed off people, but didn't notice anything unusual when I finally got in and dropped a book off at the library.

    Powerbook G4 power cord
Hi peeps, so the power cord for my brother's Powerbook G4 conked out and he needs it replaced, so where could one be bought here in Toronto? I don't think it's even sold anymore, so I guess it wouldn't be in Futureshop or Best Buy but in smaller specialty places instead. So, anyone got leads, or shall I suggest simply checking the stores on College and Spadina?

    Specialty keyboard?
Does anyone happen to know where a friend of mine visiting from the EU can buy a French Canadian keyboard in the GTA?   At this point, an online purchase will likely take too long.

Specifically, he's looking Microsoft natural keyboard 4000 -- the French Canadian version.

(And just in case you're curious, you can find out more info about what I'm referring to here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:KB_Canadian_French.svg.)
